Building Skills for the Big Centenary Foxhunt!
As part of our landmark 100th Anniversary celebrations, the club is gearing up to host a massive upcoming Foxhunt! Because we’ll be welcoming plenty of family and friends to the main event, our latest club session was all about building up our tracking skills so we can help our guests have the absolute best time possible.
Soren started the day with a warm welcome and a brief tutorial, bringing both members and visitors up to speed on the core techniques of foxhunting. He explained why having a specialized direction-finding antenna is so critical for this activity and luckily, we had the custom antennas we built back in May ready to go!
We learned that some of the best tracking techniques can actually feel a bit counterintuitive at first. For instance, when you get close to the transmitter, you sometimes have to completely remove the antenna from your handheld radio, or even use your own body as a shield by standing directly between the radio and the hidden “foxes.”
With the theory sorted, it was time to hit the field! Everyone was scrambling through the grass in hot pursuit, and we’re happy to report the only battle scars of the day were a few minor grass cuts.
A massive congratulations to our two reigning champs of the day: Marin’s son Ante and Anya! Both of them are completely new to the hobby but out-hunted us all. Fantastic job, you two!
